Guest Speaker – Dr Karaitiana Taiuru ( Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Toa)

Dr Karaitiana Taiuru is a distinguished Māori technology ethicist and governance expert, specializing in Māori Data Sovereignty, AI ethics, and the integration of tikanga Māori with emerging technologies. With more than 30 years of experience, his expertise lies in the intersection of Māori culture, technology, and governance. He has made significant contributions to integrating Māori values into digital spaces, particularly in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, indigenous intellectual property, and health equity. Dr Taiuru leads a boutique consultancy that offers services such as AI impact assessments, Māori-centric algorithm audits, and data sovereignty governance.

Dr Taiuru is a member of the Māori Trademarks Advisory Committee, and an expert witness in the Waitangi Tribunal’s WAI 2522 inquiry on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, Dr Taiuru pioneered the world’s first unmoderated Indigenous domain name <.maori.nz> and has been the kaitiaki of <.iwi.nz> since 2000, giving Māori a distinct digital identity. As Chair of Kāhui Māori at the AI Forum NZ, he developed Te Tiriti-based ethical principles for AI, ensuring Māori perspectives are embedded in emerging technologies.  Some of his academic achievements include a PhD in Tikanga Māori Sovereignty in genetic research completed at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, highlighting cultural safety in health studies and Master’s degree, with distinction, in indigenous and Māori Leadership) awarded by University of Canterbury. Dr. Taiuru is also an accomplished author and speaker, he continues to be a key voice in protecting and promoting Māori rights in the digital age.
